Our Care Programme

Weight loss surgery is the most effective tool currently available to bring about significant, sustained, health-improving weight loss. It is, however, just that: a 'tool'. Long term success with weight loss surgery requires a change in lifestyle. While the surgery itself will support you to make these changes, success is most often achieved with professional advice to help guide you through the transformations taking place in your body.

The professionals involved in our team take an evidence-based approach which is designed to help you succeed with surgery, and to identify patients who will require extra support before their operation takes place in order to do well. This routinely starts with meeting your surgeon. All of our patients work with a dietitian, where we go into detail with your current dietary patterns, and prepare you for the dietary demands leading up to the operation and in the weeks and months immediately following. All patients receive one appointment with a clinical psychologist before surgery. This usually does not take the form of therapy, but is an assessment to ensure you are prepared for the changes that can take place in many aspects of life after surgery. Our bariatric nurse will also introduce herself and be a point of contact for you throughout your journey with us.

This thorough preparation is also an opportunity to address any medical issues which may need managing to ensure a safe operation. This may include review by our anaesthetist, gastroscopy (telescope into the stomach), a sleep study or heart investigations, and will be organised through a plan with your surgeon.

After your operation, we provide ongoing support during the first two years, to help you do your best while the majority of the weight loss is taking place. At two years we provide handover to your general practitioner, with advice on lifelong monitoring for optimal nutrition.
